CHAPTER 18: Night Thoughts . . .

    Liam stayed by her side all night to keep her calm. She fell asleep holding Liam's hand, which he thought to be comforting. Whenever he did try to slip away, Emily would squeeze his hand for him to stay, even when she was asleep. Even if he did take comfort in her trust towards him, he couldn't trust himself for what he was.

    Being by her side while she slept was the hardest night he had ever experienced. He had been really good to not jump her whenever she did fall asleep before he did, now that he knew her past, he had another reason to not bed her. His reason to protect her as her guardian, his reason to keep her trusting him, and now because of her past.

    How long had he been living with Emily? A month now? Usually, he would have left weeks ago and continue incognito. With other scouts from Heaven and Hell walking around and looking for runaway demons, he had been living cautiously, never staying in a place too long. If they were to discover him then and there, he would be endangering Emily just for being close to him.

    Although, in the colder seasons, Hell scouts would stay inside since it had gotten too cold for them to handle. Since Liam had been wandering the mortal world for centuries, he had grown accustomed to the seasonal changes like the mortals have. By the time it would become warmer, he would start wandering again, given the nomad that he was.

    But now Emily was involved . . . He got a job because he had to protect Emily from whatever was hunting her and her vulnerable being made him want to stay longer until she realized he simply didn't age. The idea of her coming with him when he would have to leave came to mind, but it would be dangerous for her . . . what would happen to her if he weren't around to protect her . . .?

    His plan was to stick around until she told him to leave. That was before something told him to become her guardian. The thought just struck him to be there for her. Which brought up the static electricity that they kept feeling whenever they touch. It made no sense to shock each other every time. At least, scientifically, it made no sense.

    And lately, either the shocks have been intense or there was none at all. Whenever they didn't feel a shock, he wondered if it was just because it was because it had been dry and windy. And if they shock each other every time, he wondered if Emily was a collector of electricity naturally. There was also another thing, but it couldn't be. It was an old myth as old as the birth of Adam and Eve . . .

    He had been told before of an emotion called "love." Where he came from, there really wasn't a lot of positive emotion, if there was, it was because the de demons were insane as hell as they feasted on the flesh of an angel they had dragged from the mortal world or Purgatory. .  After he started envying the mortal world, he slipped away after giving into his lust for the delicate lives of mortals to escape the world of warfare and misery. From then on, he had seen emotions that he had never seen in Hell. He saw what positivity looked like and got a chance to see what love looked like.

    Before he had left and learned of the term love, he was also taught there was one kind that was desired the most. Something called "true love." Another term for two people meant for each other . . . "soul mates." He laughed then at the term since he gad been raised to believe that demons didn't have a soul and that demons would never experience love. But at the same time, he wanted that. He wanted to feel that since the mortals got to feel it.

    They were created with free will, unlike their demonic and angelic counterpart . . .

    One more thing before he had left. Myths were heard that people who experience "true love" would feel one out of the six things to know if the person was your "soul mate." Sixth sense, taste, smell, hearing, sight, and . . . touch. Love at first sight, hearing a person's voice for the first time, a certain smell captivating them, the taste of lips, instincts is another term of sixth sense, and the last bit being feeling a shocking feeling of static electricity. That being shocked by your soul mate will happen often and that the feeling doesn't go on forever. Static electricity between soul mates was a connection between souls reaching out to one another . . .

    It was silly to believe in that silly myth. A demon . . . was the soul mate of a mortal. A mortal's true love being a spawn from Hell. The mortals have been warned of many forms of love that wasn't allowed. Even an angel bedding a mortal was looked upon as sinful. There was no doubt in his mind that a mortal being with a demon was anything but unholy.

    Thanks, God . . . You give love as a gift to man and even allow Lucifer's followers to feel it too, even though it was not allowed? Genius move, God. Not only that, but You even allow that poor child to be soul mates with a demon. You dislike her greatly, don't You?

    Great . . . now he was convinced that Emily is his soul mate. He talked to himself in hopes of God hearing his bantering about soul mates and condemning a mortal for being destined with a Hell spawn. Couldn't believe he believed the myth to be real . . .

    He looked to Emily and squeezed her hand while she slept. Liam stayed up all night thinking of the situation. About everything and what it meant. What the hell was he going to do? They already promised each other not to fall in love with each other, easy for him and Emily most likely didn't know what love felt like since she lived in a household of parents that hated her. They promised not to fall in love with each other and there he was thinking about it . . . two beings meant for each other that shouldn't be meant to be.

    Liam looked out the window watching the sunrise. He sighed and gently shook her awake when her alarm clock started beeping. "Time to wake up . . ."

    Emily groaned and turned off her alarm clock. She let go of his hand and stretched her arms before sitting up to crack her back. Her eyes were still puffy from crying last night and her eyes were still rather pink from it too. "Morning," she yawned and cracked her knuckles.

    "Good morning." He stared at her for a little while, looking at her messy appearance after waking up.

    It was not the thought of her meant to be with him or the incubus side talking, but she still looked lovely and desirable.
